Abohar, October 18

At a meeting of canal regulatory committees at Sriganganagar today, the proposal to close Gang (Bikaner) canal from October 25 to November 5 for the repair work in the Punjab area was withdrawn.

Presiding over the meeting, district collector PC Kishan said farmers’ bodies had submitted that closure at this stage would hit sowing, hence the same would now be done either in December or January to carry out repair work in the Punjab area. “The canal system needs major repair urgently,” he said.

Those who were present at the meeting included Superintending Engineer Arun Sidana, Executive Engineer Hari Shanker Kumawat and chairmen of different canal regulatory committees.

DC PC Kishan said nobody would be allowed to lay seize at headworks in the district and regulation should be religiously and judiciously followed to ensure fair working of canals.

Kisan Sangharsh Samiti spokesman Subhash Sehgal welcomed the decision and said Khuikhera and neighbouring villages in Fazilka district were also victims of leakage from Gang canal. — OC
