WHAT IS SMART GRID?
10/18/20163
 It is a power system architecture that permits two way
communication between the grid and essentially all devices
that connect to it.
 Under smart grid model traditional generation still has a
large role, but it is augmented by distributed generation in
the form of wind ,solar and various other customer- owned
generation sources that not only generate electricity for end
customers, but can also sell electricity back to utility

INDIAN GOVERNMENT INITIATIVES
TOWARD A SMART GRID
10/18/20167
India Smart Grid Task Force (ISGTF)
 The Government of India formed the India Smart Grid Task
Force in 2010 as an inter-ministerial group
 It is a body composed of officials from different government
departments .
 Major functions of the ISGTF are:
a. Ensure awareness, coordination, and integration of diverse
activities related to smart grid technologies
b. Promote practices and services for R&D of smart grids
c. Coordinate and integrate other relevant intergovernmental
activities
d. Collaborate on an interoperability framework
e. Review and validate recommendations from ISGF.
10/18/20168
India Smart Grid Forum (ISGF)
 The Government of India also formulated the India Smart Grid
Forum in 2010 as a non- profit, voluntary consortium of public
and private stakeholders .
 Prime objective is development of smart grid technologies in
the Indian power sector.
 Goal is to make it more efficient, cost-effective, innovative and
scalable manner by bringing together all the key stakeholders
and enabling technologies.
 The India Smart Grid Forum will coordinate and cooperate
with relevant global and Indian bodies to leverage global
experience and standards where ever available or helpful, and
will highlight any gaps in the same from an Indian perspective.
Distribution Reform, Upgrades, and Management
(DRUM)
10/18/20169
 The Ministry of Power, Government of India, and the U.S.
Agency for International Development(USAID)–India jointly
designed the Distribution Reform, Upgrades and Management
(DRUM) Project.
 Purpose -demonstrating “the best commercial and
technological practices that improve the quality and reliability
of 'last mile' power distribution in selected urban and rural
distribution circles in the country.
 The overall programmatic goal of the DRUM Project is to
demonstrate commercially viable electricity distribution
systems that provide reliable power of sufficient quality to
consumers.
10/18/201610
Re-Structured Accelerated Power Development and
Reforms Program (R-APDRP)
 Ministry of Power, Govt. of India, as a part of Reforms in the
Power Sector, has launched the RAPDRP in the Five year Plan.
 The focus of the program is on the actual demonstrable
performance in terms of AT&C loss reduction.
 Establishment of the reliable and automated sustainable
systems for collection of base line data,
 Adoption of information technology in the areas of electricity
accounting, Consumer care and strengthening of Distribution
network of State Power Utilities.

Other smart grid projects
10/18/201617
 Smart Grid Research Laboratory, CPRI, Bangalore, India
 The aim of this project is to establish Smart Grid Research
Laboratory comprising of Smart Grid Technology Centre
(SGTC) and Interoperability Laboratory .
 AMI Project, TATA Powers Mumbai
 The project includes deployment of Advanced Metering
Infrastructure
 Smart Grid Pilot project for Indiranagar, Bangalore by
BESCOM
 This project involves implementation of the latest technology
in the power supply system and enables it to withstand very
high-speed cyclones, with wind speed of upto 350-kmph
10/18/201618
Chhatrapur Smart Grid Pilot Project
 A Smart Grid pilot project covering 5800+ consumers is
being taken up with State Government funding at
Chhatrapur in Odessa. The DPR for the project has been
prepared. 9
Battery Energy Storage demonstration projects
 Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL) has
floated a tender for 3 demonstration projects on grid
connected battery energy storage. The technologies
specified are: (i) Lithium Iron Batteries, (ii) Advanced
Lead Acid Batteries, and (iii) Flow Batteries or
Sodium Sulphur Batteries. The capacity envisaged is
500kW & 250 kWH.

CONCLUSIONS
10/18/201624
Indian Experience with Smart Grid Applications
•Introduction of Advanced Measuring Infrastructure (AMI) for
remote, regular & reliable reading
•Electricity consumption reading and through real time monitoring
suggesting demand forecasting, peak load management, and
management of dynamic tariff .
•Enabling of Remote connect / disconnect that facilitate the
enabling of partial (individual / group of consumers) rather than
feeder level outage remotely
•Implementing outage management system and integration of
distributed generation
•Improvement in the power quality, reliability of power supply,
Network Control management etc.
