Since Daimler AG came clean about Mercedes-Benz’s development of a mid-size pickup truck, the world has never been the same again. Not only did Audi and BMW promised to keep an eye on what the peeps at Mercedes-Benz are up to with the plushy workhorse, but the rumor mill adds fuel to the fire.
The latest hearsay to concern the Mercedes-Benz pickup comes from TF1, a French publication that wants you to believe that the new kid on the block will be soon revealed. According to the cited report, the luxed-up pickup truck will be officially presented next Tuesday, on October 25, 2016. After that’s done, the first public outing is reportedly planned for the Sao Paulo Motor Show.
While it’s easy to confirm that Mercedes will be present at the said auto show, the German automaker didn’t slip a word about the possibility of debuting an all-new product at the Brazilian event. Be it now or later on, the luxurious workhorse from Mercedes-Benz is sure to go into production.
Expected to be called either GLT or X-Class, the mid-size pickup will bolster Mercedes-Benz’s presence in the light commercial vehicle segment. Based on the ladder frame of the Nissan Navara NP300 and Renault Alaskan, production of the pickup with the three-pointed star could by handled by Nissan Motor Iberica in Spain or Nissan Santa Isabel in Argentina.
Being a luxed-up version of the Navara NP300 and Alaskan, the GLT or X-Class, whatever it will be called, will surely offer better a ride than its forerunners. The Mercedes-Benz pickup truck’s got its work cut out for it, though, thanks to a coil-spring five-link rear suspension system.
Other than the upmarket exterior design, silkier suspension, and NVH refinements, the Mercedes-Benz GLT / X-Class is also expected to adopt a 3.0-liter V6 turbo diesel as standard, not a 2.3-liter dCi four-pot diesel.
