Remaining Olympic qualifying events for the Indian players

Until now, a total of 29 Indian players have qualified for the London Olympics 2012 but still a lot more players can qualify for this Mega Event through the various Olympic qualifying tournaments.Here is a brief about those tournaments.

1. HOCKEY

After failing to qualify for the Beijing Olympics in 2008, the Indians will be hoping to qualify for the London Olympics 2012 through the last Olympic qualification tournament which will start from Feb 18th in New Delhi.

Also, the women’s hockey team will be fighting to get an Olympic berth.In the men’s category apart from India – world ranking (10),there are 5 other teams which are Poland(19), Canada(11), France(18), Italy(28) and Singapore(41).

In women’s category also there are 6 teams which are India(13), South Africa(12), Italy(19), Canada(20), Ukraine(26) and Poland(28). We hope that this time both men’s and women’s team qualify for this prestigious tournament.

2. ARCHERY

In Archery until now, 4 Indian archers have booked their place for the London Olympics. India has won three quota places for women’s individual event. India has also qualified for the women’s recurve team event. Jayanta Talukadar, has also won an individual berth for men’s event.But that’s not all still many more talented Indian Archers like Tarundeep Rai,Rahul Banerjee,Jignes Chittobamma etc. can make it to the Olympics 2012 by final Qualification tournament which will take place from 18-24th June in Ogden U.S.A.

3.BOXING

During the World Boxing Championships which were held in Baku, Azerbaijan last year 4 Indian Boxers namely Devendro Singh,Manoj Kumar,Jai Bhagwan and Vikas Krishnan qualified for the Olympics 2012 but still many other Indian Boxers like the 2008 Olympic Games Bronze medalist Vijender Singh,Suranjoy Singh,Dinesh Kumar,Paramjeet Samota etc can make it to the main event by qualifying through the last qualification tournament in Boxing which will be held in Astana,Kazakhstan from April 4 to April 13 2012.Also this time Women’s boxing have been included in the Olympics and the eyes of the whole nation will be on the 5 time World Champion M.C. Mary Kom. For women there is only one Olympic qualifying tournament which is AIBA Women’s world Boxing Championships and will take place from 9th may to 20th may in Qinhuangado,China.We all hope that this time India gets at least a gold medal in the Olympics.

4.ROWING

As far as India is concerned no player from India has qualified for the London Olympic so far but hopes are still alive,many talented Indian rowers like the Asian Games gold medalist Bajarang lal Takhar,Shokender Tomar and Sonu Laxminaraian will have a strong chance to qualify for the London Olympics through Asian Continental Qualification Regatta which will be held in Chungju,South Korea from April 26th to April 29th.

5.BADMINTON

The Olympic qualification period will be between 2 May 2011 and 29 April 2012, and the Badminton World Federation rankings list, published on 3 May 2012, will be used to allocate spots.In singles there will be 64 players and in doubles there will be 32 pairs.Indians who are expected to qualify for the London 2012 are Saina Nehwal,V.Diju,Jwala Gutta,Ashwini Ponappa,Parupalli Kashyap and Ajay Jayaram but still there way to qualification is not very easy and they have to be consistent in their performance so as to maintain their world ranking so that they can qualify directly.

6.TENNIS

In tennis 56 players will receive direct acceptance into the singles events at the 2012 Olympic Tennis Event based on the recognized international singles computer rankings of 11 June 2012,in doubles players ranked 10 or better based on the recognized international computer ranking of 11 June 2012 will have direct qualification,as of now Sania Mirza,Leander Paes are in top 10 in doubles while Rohan Bopanna is 11th and Mahesh Bhupati is ranked 15th so surely Indians have a bright chance to win a medal in doubles event in the London Olympics.

7. WEIGHTLIFTING

Many talented and skilled Indian Weightlifters like Ravi Kumar,Sonia Chanu, Shyamlal etc. will be aiming to qualify for the Olympics through the 2012 Olympic Qualifying tournament from 23rd to 26th April in Pyeongtaek,South Korea.

8.WRESTLING

In 2008 Olympics Sushil Kumar made our country proud by winning the bronze medal for India but still he has to qualify for the London Olympics.No Indian wrestler qualified for the Olympics during the world championships in Turkey last year but still through Asian Qualifying Tournament which will take place from 30 March to April 1st in Almaty, Kazakhstan and World Qualification Tournament from 27 to 29 April in Taiyuan, China Indians can qualify for the London 2012,but if India need to grab a medal at the Olympics they need to work very very hard.

9. ATHLETICS

8 Indian athletes in various track and field events have qualified for the London Olympics so far but still many others can qualify in the various tournaments like Asian All Stars meet in Almaty, Kazakhstan from July 1 2012 and other qualifying tournaments which will be held in April,may and june.Top Indian contenders for medal at the Olympics will be Krishna Poonia, Mayukha Johnny and Vikas Gowda but every other athlete from India can go for the medal if they give their best.

10.TABLE TENNIS

As of till now no TT player has made it to the Olympics 2012 but its not yet over through Asian Qualification Tournament which will be held in Hong Kong from 19 to 23rd April 2012,the tournament will be for both men and women and Final World Olympic Qualification Tournament which will be held in Doha from 10-13 May.
