First Series Production Audi EV To Bear 'e-tron' Name — Another quattro In The Making?
German carmaker Audi has confirmed that its first ever electric vehicle will be called the e-tron. The first EV bearing the name will be a SUV.
Rupert Stradler, the CEO of German luxury carmaker Audi has confirmed that his company's first ever series production electric vehicle (EV) will bear the name 'e-tron.'
Speaking to Autocar UK, Stradler stated that the naming scheme would be similar to how Audi introduced its 'quattro' all-wheel drive system with the 1980 Audi quattro.
Stradler stated that the e-tron name would signify an all electric drivetrain in Audi's vehicles similar to how 'quattro' is now synonymous with four-wheel-drive.
The first EV from Audi will be a SUV which was previewed by the e-tron quattro SUV concept from the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show. The SUV is expected to be followed by a hatchback and a sedan.
Audi's current line up of 'A' hatchbacks and sedans and the 'Q' SUVs will also have all-electric variants which will be designated by the e-tron suffix in the model name.
The e-tron lineup of vehicles will go up against BMW's i division and the EQ sub-brand of Mercedes-Benz which made its debut at the 2016 Paris Motor Show.
The e-tron lineup shows a shift in Audi's electric car roadmap as it makes its EV lineup more mainstream it recently canceled the R8 e-tron electric sports car.
