CHENNAI: A 19-year-old student pursuing a nano-technology course committed suicide by hanging from the ceiling of his hostel room on the SRM University campus at Kattankolathur on Sunday. The body was recovered on Monday morning after his roommates complained of a foul smell emanating from the room.
The deceased, identified as P Logesh Guhan, native of Tiruppur, returned to his hostel room on Saturday evening after spending the puja holidays with his family .
Police said Guhan shared a room at the `Kaari' hostel block with Akil and Vijaya Baskar.
When Vijaya Baskar reached the hostel, he noticed foul smell coming out of the room. The door was bolted from inside and there was no response when he knocked. Following this, he informed the hostel warden.
When they peeped through the ventilator, they found Guhan hanging from the ceiling. The warden informed the police, who broke opened the door and recovered the body . They registered a case under CrPC section 174 (unnatural death). Preliminary inquiries revealed that Guhan had joined the course in the academic year 2015-2016 and he discontinued his studies after he met with an accident last year.
As he had not attended classes for almost half the year, the college management placed him under suspension and he joined the same course this academic year. Meanwhile, he again met with another accident and suffered a leg injury. He visited his house last week and stayed there for the puja holidays.
