NASHIK: The Nashik police department has come up with a novel idea to make students follow traffic rules diligently.
The police, in association with Nashik First, have started project DON (Dost of Nashik) wherein college students who follow traffic rules will be awarded a DON sticker that he/she can proudly paste on their vehicles.
On Saturday, the police revealed the first 24 Dons of Nashik, including the commissioner of police, NMC commissioner, Mayor, renowned industrialists, entrepreneurs, among others.
Deputy commissioner of police (headquarters and traffic) Vijay Patil said "The aim of the programme is to make students imitate a Don who follows traffic rules, including wearing safety gears, not jumping signals, not indulging in rash driving, etc."
Police commissioner Ravinder Kumar Singal said, "I want everyone in the city to be a Don. However, the status comes with lot of responsibility which should be worth emulating by others."
Pointing out that a city gets a good name if the traffic movement is good and everyone in the city should follow traffic rules, Singal said", "Over the past two months we were working on various ideas to improve the traffic scenario of the city and found that involvement of youth is necessary to bring about a positive change."
Vinayak Govilkar, an economist, who also spoke at the programme held at the Children's Traffic Education Park by Nashik First, appreciated the efforts of police department for involving youth.
A team of four students has been formed in every college where students will spread awareness about traffic and conduct campaigns. Those following traffic rules will be given the DON stickers to be pasted on their vehicles.
