PUNE: The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has decided to withdraw the system of charging four-wheeler owners Rs85 if their vehicles remained on the airport premises for more than seven minutes.
Pune MP Anil Shirole, who also heads the Pune Airport Advisory Board, on Monday said, "From Tuesday (October 18), people will be charged Rs85. But no parking will be allowed in and around the terminal. A new system will be put in place within a fortnight and AAI will float fresh tenders aimed at proper parking for the next six months.
Until the new system comes into effect, the system of charging Rs85 would remain suspended."
Hailing the decision, Sameer Sharma, an entrepreneur, said, "This is very good news. The seven-minute system led to complete chaos near the terminal and the hurry posed a threat to people. I am very happy that the system is gone now and hope that the authorities will come up with a better alternative."
An official told TOI, "Ideally, those coming to drop their family members or friends at the airport in private cars should have drivers. The idea is cars should not be parked along the terminal under any circumstances. Once the passengers get out of vehicles, the drivers should steer them outside the airport and park at a suitable place or at the parking lot of the airport just outside the premises. After seeing the friends or relatives off, the family members can contact the driver and come to the spot where the car is parked."
