9-month-old falls in pit of water, drowns

PUNE: Nine-month-old Sufiyan Hafiz Shaikh drowned after he accidentally fell into a pit filled with water outside his house at Pawar Vasti in Dapodi on Monday around 4 pm.
Three days ago, his father Hafiz had died in a road accident near Indapur on Pune-Solapur highway. Sufiyan's mother, who sustained severe injuries in the accident, is being treated in the intensive care unit of a private hospital, police said.
Senior inspector of Bhosari police station Dilip Kulkarni told TOI that Sufiyan was staying with his uncle.He was playing inside the house, but crawled out, he added.
"When his relatives did not find Sufiyan inside the house, they began looking for him and found him in the pit," Kulkarni said. He was taken to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him dead.
