VADODARA: The Nationalist Students Union of India (NSUI) on Monday joined the chorus demanding that the new Vadodara International Airport be named after Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III, the visionary ruler of erstwhile Baroda state.
The student outfit conducted a signature campaign at the main building of Faculty of Commerce.
"We have collected over 1,500 signatures and majority of students want that the international airport be named after Sayajirao Gaekwad III - who has gifted Vadodara iconic buildings and institutes because of which the city is still known," said Hitesh Batra, general secretary of MSU Students Union.

"We will mail the signatures to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani among others with an appeal letter," he said.
The student outfit said that since member of the royal family and MSU chancellor Shubhangini Raje Gaekwad, who was one of the signatories when Prime Minister Narendra Modi filed his candidature from Vadodara Lok Sabha seat has also written a letter demanding the same, Modi should accept her request.
The Prime Minister will inaugurate the airport on October 22. An online petition to name the airport after Sayajirao III has already gone viral.
