This Film About a Famous Pilot Was Created With Typewriter Font

Amy Johnson went from typist to history-making pilot.

In 1930, Amy Johnson become the first woman to fly solo from England to Australia.

Before she became a pilot, Johnson was a typist for a firm of solicitors. Filmmaker Lizzy Hobbs cleverly pays homage to her career journey in this animated film—created with a typewriter and type. Hobbs convincingly turns letters into images, using plus signs, ampersands, O’s, and more to conjure the image of a plane, and the weather Johnson encountered on the flight. She also colors in some of the typewritten letters, creating a delightfully whimsical design. Look closely and you’ll see the word “Amy” in the plane.
