Ranji Trophy 2016-17: Rishabh Pant becomes 3rd youngest triple centurion

Rishab Pant became the third-youngest Indian to score a first-class triple hundred after Wasim Jaffer and Abhinav Mukund.

Rishab Pant played a heroic knock of 308 in 326 balls against Maharashtra in Ranji Trophy but could not save his team from conceding points. The Delhi wicket-keeper has scored 454 runs from only two games this season at an average of 227 runs. Pant, during his triple century, smashed 42 fours and nine sixes. With his quick-fire triple ton, Pant became the third-youngest Indian to score a first-class triple hundred, after Wasim Jaffer and Abhinav Mukund, as well as the second wicket-keeper to score a triple century in the Ranji Trophy, and seventh in first-class cricket.

 

* This is the first instance in a Ranji Trophy match when three batsmen have registered scores of over 250.

* Rishabh Pant is only the second wicket-keeper in Ranji Trophy history to register a triple century.

* He is also the third youngest Indian to score a triple-century in first-class cricket, after Wasim Jaffer and Abhinav Mukund.

* Wasim Jaffer holds the record of youngest Indian triple centurion in Ranji Trophy. He was 18 years and 267 days old when he scored an unbeaten 314 while playing for Mumbai against Saurashtra at Rajkot in 1996-97.

* Abhinav Mukund was 18 years and 303 days old when he scored an unbeaten 300 while playing for Tamil Nadu against Maharashtra at Nasik in 2008-09.

* Swapnil Gugale scored an unbeaten 351 runs in Maharashtra’ s first innings, while Rishabh Pant scored 308 for Delhi. It was only second first-class match to have two triple centuries. The first match took place in the 1988-89 edition, between Tamil Nadu and Goa, which saw triple centuries from Woorkeri Raman (313) and Arjan Kripal Singh (302 not out).

* Javed Miandad holds the record of youngest triple centurion in first- class cricket. He was 17 years and 311 days old when he scored 311, while playing for Karachi Whites against National Bank of Pakistan at Karachi in 1974-75.
