FARIDKOT: A group of Sikh organizations, including the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) (Amritsar) and Dal Khalsa, criticized the Punjab government on Sunday, saying that it had failed to prosecute the cops responsible for the killing of two Sikh youths in police firing during a protest at Faridkot's Behbal Kalan village on October 14 last year.
Village Sarawan resident Gurjit Singh and Behbal Khurd resident Krishan Bhagwan Singh had died in the police firing that had been ordered to disperse people protesting over the sacrilege of the Sikh holy book Guru Granth Sahib.
SAD (Amritsar) chief Simranjit Singh Mann described the lack of government action as “sheer injustice with Sikh community“. “The Sikhs see it as an act of a raw deal with them,“ he said.
Dal Khalsa president Harpal Singh Cheema claimed that chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and home minister Sukhbir Singh Badal were shielding the cops who ordered the firing.
He said the state government had buckled under police pressure and had ignored the pleas of human rights' defenders and justice-seekers.
Taking a dig at the state government, he said the government-appointed Justice Zora Singh Commission and people's commission of Justice Markandey Katju, both, had held police officials who were leading the force at the time of the protest, responsible for the deaths, but even then nothing was done.
