Gone are the days when teachers taught kids letters and words by showing them pictures. With classrooms going digital and gadgets becoming more affordable, text books for school children have also been reduced such that it can be kept digitally on a device.

A group of youngsters in Malappuram district, which includes teachers, has set a new method of teaching primary class students by converting text book into cartoon videos. The group, led by Ishaq Ali Vettupara, a teacher of MIAM U P School, Cheruvattoor and K P Ali Abdu Rahim, has converted English text book into animated video.

The animated text is designed in such a way that it can be installed on tablets and smartphones. While the text is converted to videos, students activities are converted to a game called Candy Kids
“Young kids are more attracted to sound and visuals than reading books. Though we have smart classrooms, we do not have materials to be used in such facilities. Videos downloaded from the internet, mostly from YouTube are used for teaching. This prompted us to think of converting the text into videos which can communicate with children in a better way,” said Ali.

He said the videos were the culmination of 15 people working for eight months. “All seven chapters in the text have been converted to cartoon video. The video will also help students learn the correct pronunciation of English words,” pointed out Ishaaq Ali.

The animated text had been introduced to teachers during the summer vacation. “If the concept is picked up by the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA), it would be beneficial for more students,” Ishaq said.
