Court dismisses extortion case against OC
A Dhaka court yesterday dismissed an extortion case hours after a lawyer filed it against five people including the officer-in-charge (OC) of Mohammadpur Police Station.
Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Khurshid Alam of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court of Dhaka did not find any grounds for taking the charge into cognisance.
Kutub Uddin Ahmed, a member of Dhaka Bar Association, said he would appeal before the higher court challenging the order's legality.
The case statement says Kutub has been residing with his family on his land at 339/A, Jafrabad in Sangkar of the capital's Mohammadpur for the past 50 years and recently built an eight-storey building there.
When he went to move in on October 9, two of the accused, Md Mamun Hossain, a real estate company's official, and Md Sohel, a local, barred him, saying he required permission of the OC, Jamal Uddin Mir.
The OC and the remaining two accused, Sub-inspector Mohammad Rajib and Assistant Sub-inspector Mohammad Khorshed, arrived and the five demanded that Kutub pay Tk 45 lakh to enter.
Rajib and Khorshed took him inside the building's garage, beat him and threatened to kill him in crossfire when he refused to comply. Kutub managed to gather and hand over to the OC Tk 2 lakh to get released, says the statement.
