Joe Berlinger is directing a four-part true crime series for SundanceTV that will revist the case detailed in Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood.

Produced by AMC Studios, RadicalMedia and Third Eye Motion Picture Company, Murder in the Heartland: In Cold Blood Revisited (working title), will air next year to coincide with the 50^th anniversary of the film version of the classic non-fiction book, which the U.S. cable network will also air.

The doc series will focus on the 1959 murder of the four members of the Clutter family in the small Kansas town of Holcomb. The subsequent investigation resulted in the convictions and executions of Perry Smith and Richard Hickock.

Berlinger, who is also producing, will re-examine the case and its broader impact on culture. He has been developing the project for more than a year and promises to present newly uncovered information related to the crime.

“Joe Berlinger has created a framework to explore this story that has as much to do with the cultural impact of the crime as it does the crime itself,” said Joel Stillerman, president of original programming and development for AMC and SundanceTV, in a statement. “It was not just a family and a community that was ripped apart, it was a seminal moment in post-war America that set the tone for what was to come.”

The director’s credits include the 1992 Sundance winner Brother’s Keeper and the Paradise Lost Trilogy. He also executive produced and directed for six seasons of the SundanceTV series Iconoclasts between 2005 and 2012. His most recent feature doc, Tony Robbins: I Am Not Your Guru, was recently released globally by Netflix.
