ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Anwar Zaheer Jamali on Thursday said monarchy is in place in Pakistan in the name of democracy. “Joke is being made with the people in the name of democracy. Monarchy is in place in the country in the name of democracy. Bad governance is going on in the name of good governance,” he said and asked the people to exercise their right to vote cautiously and carefully while electing their representatives. He also said the historical heritages were being effaced in the name of the Orange Line Metro Train project. “The question is there for the protection of national historical heritage. Historical heritages are our identification. If people support such people in election then it will happen so,” he said. He gave these remarks while presiding over a five-member larger bench during the hearing of the Punjab government’s appeal against the Lahore High Court’s decision in the metro train case. Members of the bench are Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed, Justice Sardar Tariq Masood, Justice Faisal Arab and Justice Ijazul Hasan. Counsel of the Punjab government argued that the Lahore High Court (LHC) had rejected the reports of the project without assigning any reason or justification. The court sought names of three neutral experts from the parties concerned for providing assistance in the case. Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed said only concerning matter in the case is regarding protection of heritage sites. “We will not tolerate any damage to these structures,” the judge added. On August 19, the Lahore High Court barred the authorities from carrying out construction work within a distance of 200 feet around 11 heritage sites, including Shalamar Gardens, Gulabi Bagh Gateway, Chauburji, Buddhu ka Awa, Zebunnisa’s Tomb, Lakshmi Building, General Post Office, Aiwan-e-Auqaf, SC Lahore Registry building, Saint Andrews Presbyterian Church on Nabha Road and Baba Mauj Darya Bukhari’s shrine. The case was adjourned until Friday (today).
