Now, Panna dist admn bans use of Chinese threads
BHOPAL: After Chinese crackers and lights whose sale have been banned by some districts in the state, it is the turn for Chinese threads (manja) used for kite flying. Panna district administration has banned use of Chinese threads that are made of plastic and synthetic material. The ban will come into effect with immediate effect. Swadeshi Jagran Manch, an organisation backed by RSS, said, “Initial reports suggest a drop in sales to the tune of 10% to 20% across the country after social media campaigns against use of Chinese items.
We will intensify our campaign against the products so that their sale drops down further.”
The ban in Panna was imposed invoking Environment Protection Act 1986, a spokesman of the district administration said, adding, we have appealed to the people not to use these threads. District project officer of urban development authority, Pramod Pathak said it has come to the notice that birds are often entangled in the Chinese threads and are killed. Once discarded, the non-bio-degradable plastic material in the thread pollutes the environment. They also chock sever lines and pollute water bodies and rivers, he said.
The electricity supply lines are also damaged by these threads used. “Use of synthetic and plastic threads has been banned looking at the overall impact it makes on environment,” he said. Earlier this week, Swadeshi Jagran manch staged a demonstration in Bhopal exhorting people to “boycott” Chinese products. “China is enemy number one of India and we should support goods made in our country”, the manch activists said.
State convenor of the SJM, Arushendra Sharma said, “before Diwali, more and more demonstrations will be held all across the state to protest Chinese products. We are working on two pronged strategy- talking to district administration requesting them to evoke anti-dumping duty, a provision of WTO to safeguard small scale industries and make people aware about.” After growing opposition against Chinese goods and a campaign on social media, Sagar district administration imposed a ban on “foreign” firecrackers. Citing a notification issued by Petroleum and Explosive Safety Organisation (PESO) on September 27 that no license had been issued for import of fire crackers made abroad, the district collector banned their sale and purchase in the district.
Many district collectors including Indore, Ujjain Ratlam, Shajapur, Khandwa and Bhind have already issued ban orders in the last four days. On October 4, the Ujjain Municipal Corporation had banned sale of Chinese products in 25-day long Kartik mela where 4 lakh people are expected to visit.
