KSDMA & INCOIS warn of severe sea erosion in Kerala coast with high swell waves & spring tides
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Heavy rains, high swell waves coupled with spring tides in Kerala coast can lead to severe coastal erosion, warn scientists at Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) and Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS).
Rough sea alert from today 5.30 pm to 11.30 pm on Sunday has been issued. This is a consequence of high swell period waves coinciding with spring tides.
This may result in strong coastal erosion in Kerala coast, KSDMA member and State Emergency Operations Centre head scientist Sekhar Kuriakose told TOI. Fisheries, Ports and Harbours need to be warned to advise the coastal community particularly the fishermen to be cautious while venturing into the sea, he said.
INCOIS has also warned of the possibility of rough sea near shores along the Kerala coast till 11.30 pm on Oct 16, due to the combined effect of high period swell waves up to a height of 1.3 m to 1.7 m coinciding with the spring tide. They have also advised fishermen to be cautious while venturing into the sea.
Indian Meteorological department has warned of heavy rains in parts of Kerala till Sunday and after a brief lull, the monsoon is expected to gear momentum with the onset of north east monsoon by third week of October.
In the last 24 hours, rains occurred at few places in Kerala and the maximum 5 cm rains each was recorded at Karipur in Malappuram, Perumbavur in Ernakulum, Aryankavu in Kollam and Amini in Lakshadweep.
