Here's taking a look at some of the other movies that have been targeted by the MNS and Shiv Sena in the past owing to various controversies...
Post the Uri attacks, the Raj Thackeray led Maharashtra Navnirmaan Sena (MNS) had threatened all the Pakistani artistes to leave the country in 48 hours failing which they would be pushed back.They have further repeatedly been threatening the release of Indian movies starring Pakistani artistes which include Karan Johar's Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, Gauri Shinde's Dear Zindagi and Shah Rukh Khan's Raees starring Fawad Khan, Ali Zafar and Mahira Khan respectively.
While one may wonder that the said threats and the decision of the MNS is justified in the wake of the killings in the Uri attacks, another issue that has been pointed out by many highlights the fact that banning these films will only affect Indian filmmakers as the Pak artistes have already taken their pay and are back in their own country.
However, this is not the first time that MNS has disrupted the proceedings of the release of Bollywood movies.There have been several instances in the past as well when MNS or Shiv Sea have either threatened the release of Bollywood films or disrupted the shoot of movies. This makes one wonder, why is Bollywood always a soft target when any controversy breaks out? Here's a look at some such controversies:
1) The Last Lear and Drona: MNS had banned all the upcoming films starring Amitabh Bachchan and his family members back in the year 2008 when Jaya Bachchan spoke in Hindi at an event. Addressing a film function in Mumbai, Jaya had said that she would prefer to speak in Hindi as she belongs to the state of UP and the natives of Maharashtra should forgive her for this. What followed was a threat banning the release of Big B's The Last Lear and Abhishek Bachchan's Drona
2) Wake Up Sid: In the year 2009, the MNS had stopped screening Ayan Mukerji's Wake Up Sid starring Ranbir Kapoor, owing to the fact that the city of Mumbai was referred to as 'Bombay' in the film. The film was produced by Karan Johar.
3) My Name Is Khan: Once again it was a Karan Johar film that was targeted in 2010 when Shah Rukh Khan, who played the protagonist in My Name Is Khan, made a statement favouring the inclusion of Pakistani cricketers in IPL-3. This was followed by a lot of protests and threats against the release of MNIK.
4) Murder 2: In the year 2011, MNS had first sent a saree to Kareena Kapoor Khan post the release of the first poster of Kurbaan. Later, they even disrupted the shooting of Mahesh Bhatt's Murder 2 at Film City. Reportedly, some crew members of the film didn't have the mandate of any association and so they wanted their own workers in their stead.
5) Khiladi 786: The shooting of Akshay Kumar's movie Khiladi 786 was disrupted by MNS workers who alleged that the shoot cannot be continued within the college campus while exams were underway. This was done despite the fact that the production had the permission to shoot in the premises from the college management.
6) Chennai Express: The year 2013 saw of Shah Ruh Khan's film Chennai Express in a controversy when the MNS threatened to disrupt its release after reports surfaced saying that the makers have demanded prime slots in single cinemas in the state which apparently affected some Marathi films being screened.
