In Bollywood, there has been a debate around the shelf life of actors. While an unwritten rule has always been actors having a longer shelf life, it's hard for actresses to get roles after crossing a certain age.

While we label the films actresses work on after marriage as their "comebacks", most of the male actors ruling the industry are over 50. Says a lot, doesn't it?

While actresses like Madhuri Dixit, Kajol, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Tabu are trying hard to shatter these preconceived notions, there is still a long way to go before we see an actual change.

In a recent interview, Kajol made a point on why marriage does not mean the end of a career for an actress in Bollywood.

Kajol decided to get married to actor Ajay Devgn at the peak of her career and after tying the knot in 1999, Kajol is now a proud mother of a 13-year-old daughter named Nysa and six-year-old son named Yug. Kajol's post-film stints include films like Fanaa, U Me Aur Hum, My Name Is Khan, We Are Family, Toonpur Ka Superrhero, and Dilwale.

According to her, the hype around it is due to the extra attention paid to the marital status of women. Talking to IANS, Kajol said,

“Married actresses have been working in films for a very long time. It’s just that they never came into focus and people never pointed them out and said, ‘Hey, you’re married and you’re working’."

Kajol added:

“You had a Sharmila Tagore, you had my mother (Tanuja), you had Saira Banu, you had so many actresses, who worked after they got married, in fact more after they got married than before they got married. Dimple Kapadia for that matter. So yes, there are actresses who have been working pre- and post-marriage and nothing changed in their entire imagery. There were a lot of actresses who did not work at all once they got married. And that is a possible choice, I believe."

Kajol, who has always been frank while stating her opinions added,

"And, of course, there were some who just didn’t make it and chose to use marriage as an excuse. So, I don’t think I’m a path-breaker in that sense. Maybe because the spotlight is on me right now. But I didn’t do it first. I just followed in some very illustrious footsteps.”
