NAGPUR: With a view to impart technical education to engineering students, automobile major Mahindra & Mahindra opened its first regional training centre — ‘Extra Mile’ — at the Government Polytechnic campus on Friday.

The centre, a joint venture between M&M and Government Polytechnic, will provide regular training to the students and introduce them to modern technologies and service practices. It is a collaboration between the company’s truck, bus division and department of automobile engineering of the polytechnic.

M&M also intends to set up five more training centres in the country this year and expand the project in the years to come.

A training programme titled ‘M Shiksha’ would educate the students on corporate social responsibility, enhance their skills as well as product knowledge.

Joint director of technical education, Nagpur region, Gulabrao Thakare and principal, CS Thorat, presided over the function along with product support head, Mahindra’s truck and bus division, Sanjoy Chandra, as the chief guest.

Chandra elaborated on the programme saying, “Mahindra & Mahindra had initiated the programme three years ago and opened the first training centre in Nagpur. We will also provide training to faculties at our facility in Pune on a quarterly basis.” The training will be part of a diploma course and the syllabus will be designed by M&M. Students will be able to enrol themselves under the current admission guidelines.

M&M has provided necessary infrastructure for the centre like engines, transmissions, axles, electricals and a haulage truck model Truxo — 25 HL.

A memorandum of understanding was signed by Thorat and senior general manager, M&M, M Balasubramanium. Also present at the event were regional service manager Vinod Katole and area manager Dhananjay Bhujade from Mahindra truck and bus division as well as college professors RB Tirpude, SD Thakre, JM Sayed and VS Kumbhar.
