Lipstick Under My Burkha trailer: A daring, feminist film unafraid of controversies

While India seems to be divided over the debate surrounding the Uniform Civil Code and the legitimacy of triple talaq, a new Indian film Lipstick Under My Burkha shows the finger to India's puritanical and patriarchal ways.

While the debate over the Uniform Civil Code and the legitimacy of triple talaq continues to rage all across the country, a new Indian film called Lipstick Under My Burkha dares to challenge the shackles led down by India's puritanical and patriarchal society on four small-town women.

Produced by Gangaajal and Raajneeti director Prakash Jha and directed by Alankrita Srivastava, Lipstick Under My Burkha stars National Award-winning actor Konkona Sena Sharma, Ratna Pathak Shah, Aahana Kumra and Plabita Borthakur.

Set in Bhopal, Lipstick Under My Burkha is the story of the four women who rebel and escape their tiresome lives. Konkona plays an oppressed housewife and a mother of three kids, who also lives the life of an enterprising saleswoman. Ratna Pathak Shah is a 55-year-old widow who rediscovers her sexuality through a romantic liason over the phone. Aahana Kumra plays a young beautician who plans to elope with her love and escape her small-town life and Plabita plays a college girl coming to terms with her cultural identity while aspiring to be a pop singer.

Alankrita Srivastava who has written and directed Lipstick Under My Burkha has directed the Gul Panag-starrer Turning 30!!! in the past. The music of Lipstick Under My Burkha has been composed by Zebunissa Bangash, one half of Pakistani duo Zeb and Haniya.

While no formal date has been announced for the film's theatrical release, Lipstick Under My Burkha will be screened at the MAMI (Mumbai Academy of the Moving Image) Film Festival on October 26.
