GUWAHATI: Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) leaders sounded an alert against the Centre's move to grant citizenship to Hindu migrants from neighboring Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan as they observed the party's 32nd foundation day here on Friday.
Former chief minister and founder-president of AGP Prafulla Kumar Mahanta said the Centre should work towards implementing the Assam Accord. "We cannot accept the idea of granting shelter to immigrants in the name of religion," Mahanta told reporters at Sarupeta in Barpeta district where the party held its foundation day celebrations.
AGP president and agriculture minister Atul Bora also said the government should focus on implementing the Assam Accord, a document signed following a bloody agitation in 1985 to rid the state of illegal migrants.
