Backstage at Giambattista Valli Spring 2017

Val Garland and Paul Hanlon created the beauty look of the show.

Giambattista Valli told makeup artist Val Garland: “I’m interested in the introspection of my women this season.” So it’s the idea of an older self reminiscing on a younger self and the path from girlhood to womanhood, she explained.

Inspiration for the natural beauty look with a peachy glow also came from the books “Memoirs of a Dutiful Daughter” and “The Coming of Age” by Simone de Beauvoir, which Valli had recently read.

“It’s just about the most perfect, flawless, velvet, matte skin,” said Garland, working with MAC Cosmetics. “So, we’re not doing any highlighters or contouring. It’s the idea of that gorgeous 14-year-old.”

Key products used on some models included Mineralize Timecheck Lotion and Studio Waterweight foundation. “On other girls, I’m just cleaning their skin, not putting moisturizer on and going straight into Studio Perfecting powders,” she continued.

Certain models were given a red lip with Feels So Grand Retro Matte Liquid Lipstick brushed on and blurred slightly at the edges. A bit of cream pencil was used on peepers, and brows were brushed up.

Paul Hanlon said Valli loved the way models looked when they had come in for their fitting, and that their naturalness contrasted well with the designer’s more embellished clothing.

“We wanted them to look fresh,” said Hanlon. “There’s just a very playful, sensitive feeling to the hair.”

He washed models’ tresses that were then left hanging free. Around their hairline, he pulled out bits that would float as they walked.

“It’s very light, super, pure hair,” said Hanlon, adding there was a David Hamilton feeling to the look.
