Reigning champions Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club suffered a shock 0-1 loss to Mohammedan Sporting Club as the Bangladesh Premier League resumed in Dhaka on Friday.
In the other match Bangabandhu National Stadium, last season’s runners-up Sheikh Russell Krira Chakra suffered their seventh defeat of the campaign as they lost to Arambagh Krira Sangha by solitary margin.
Forward Towhidul Alam Sabuz scored the all important goal in the second half to help Mohammedan taste their maiden win of the current edition, which incidentally is also the first defeat of Jamal in 10 matches.
With the win, Mohammedan moved to the ninth position of the table with as many points while Jamal lost the opportunity to take the solo lead after collecting 19 points from their previous matches.
They are currently sharing the top spot with Rahmatganj MFS, with the Old Dhaka outfits playing one match less.
The first half ended goalless with both sides producing some attacking football.
Jamal keeper Mazharul Islam Hemel produced a brilliant save to deny a powerful free-kick from Senegalese defender Yaya Sy in the 19th minute.
Mohammedan took the lead in the 48th minute when Sabuz celebrated his fifth goal of the league with a nice poke from a goal mouth melee following a header from Shahed.
In the day’s other match, Arambagh handed a 1-0 defeat to Russell, thanks to their Brazilian recruit Tyson, who scored the winner in the 37th minute.
Arambagh managed their third win which put them in the sixth position of the points table with 14 points while Russell remained in 11th place with five points.
