KOZHIKODE: Three patients with liver and kidney failure got the biggest gift of their lifetime after the relatives of 61-year-old Leela, who was declared brain-dead agreed to donate the organs of the deceased.
Leela, hailing from Vadakandi house, Cheliyam near Koyilandy was declared
brain dead following an
intracranial bleed at the
Kozhikode Medical College hospital here on Friday at 1 am. She was admitted to the Kozhikode Medical College hospital on October 13.
The liver and one kidney of the deceased were donated to two patients admitted to the Aster Malabar Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS), Kozhikode.
Another kidney was donated to a patient at the Kozhikode Medical college hospital. A team lead by Dr Sajeesh Sahadevan and Dr Seethalalkshmy at Aster MIMIS along with the doctors of the Kozhikode government medical college procured the organs of the deceased from the Kozhikode Medical College.
The kidney was donated to a 47-year-old woman hailing from Ambalavayal of Wayanad district. Kidney transplant surgery was conducted by a team of doctors comprising Urologists Dr Krishnamohan, Dr Abhayanand and Dr Khurshid Ahmed along with Anaesthetist Dr Biju Shekhar and nephrologists Dr Sajith Narayanan, Dr Feroz Aziz, Dr Ismail and Dr Benil Hafeeque.
The liver was successfully transplanted into a 45 year-old male from Cherukulathoor, Kozhikode.
Liver Transplant surgeons Dr Sajeesh Shadevan, Dr Rajesh Nambiar, Dr Rohit Raveendran and Dr Seethalakshmy along with Anaesthetist Dr K Kishore K conducted liver transplant surgery.
