Lt General Vipin Rawat on Friday briefed the Parliamentary Committee on Defence on the surgical strike. The committee is headed by BJP MP BC Khanduri.
Earlier in the day, National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah said that peace should prevail and both India and Pakistan should sit and discuss outstanding issues. On Thursday Congress leaders were upset with the government over reports of last minute change in agenda of the committee.
On September 29, days after the Uri attack in which 19 army jawans lost their strike, the Indian army launched surgical strikes in Pok, in which not only some terrorists were killed but also few of their camps were destroyed.
Even though Pakistan has claimed that there was no surgical strikes by the Indian army, US has supported India’s cause saying every country has the right to defend its territory. Back home there was a political tug of war with several leaders including Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal asking the government to come out with proof of strikes, which was rejected by the Government. However, almost all political parties have decided to support the government on the issue.
Even as the prime minister has asked BJP leaders to avoid political chest thumping over the issue, its Uttar Pradesh unit had already released advertisements praising the Centre’s efforts during his visit in Lucknow during Dussehra recently.
With Lt General Vipin Rawat briefing the committee on the issue, it is being hoped that all debates on whether the surgical strikes video should be released for the people of the country to see, will finally rest.
