Former “encounter specialist” Tarun Barot, currently on bail in the Ishrat Jahan and the Sadiq Jamal Mehtar encounter cases, was brought back to service by the Gujarat government on Thursday, nearly two years after his retirement.
In a notification, the home department stated that Barot (62), who retired as deputy superintendent of police (DySP), has been appointed as DySP, headquarters, Western Railway, Vadodara on a one-year contract.
Another police officer, B R Chaube, currently on bail in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh encounter, has been brought back in Gujarat as DySP, State Reserve Police Force, Viramgam in Ahmedabad district. He was posted in Mumbai as liaison officer at the Information and Broadcasting Department after being reinstated in 2014.
Chaube was confined to Mumbai as per his bail condition set by the Supreme Court in 2014. Recently, his bail was modified, which allowed him to return to Gujarat.
The development came a day after the government, in a reshuffle of IPS officers, appointed Rajkumar Pandian and Abhay Chudasama — both discharged by the special CBI court in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh encounter case — as inspector general (Junagadh range) and deputy inspector general (Panchmahal), respectively.
On his appointment, Barot told The Indian Express: “Bhagwan ne kiya hai, aur kya bolu (God has done it, what else can I say).” Barot had retired in 2014 when he was still in jail.
