NAGPUR: For past few years, Gita Selukar (76) from Amravati (name changed) would repeat words and sentences so often that her family labelled it as an old-age syndrome. Though it was irritating initially, the family had got used to it gradually. Little did they imagine that there could be a medical cause underlying the behaviour.
After falling unconscious on September 13, Selukar was taken to a hospital in Amravati and subsequently shifted to Orange City Hospital and Research Institute (OCHRI).
The doctors found that she had a huge brain tumour (7x6cm) which resulted in her comatose condition. Behavioural changes, including her conversations and weakness in her limbs were also due to the tumour.
The patient was admitted and operated for tumour removal on September 19. But she could be discharged only on October 10 till“It was a big tumour. If she was not operated on time, the patient could not have survived,” said Dr Anup Marar, OCHRI medical director.
In the five hours’ surgery, Dr Bhati was supported by Dr Sweety Pasari and Dr Kavita Dhurvey, anaesthetists. The other doctors involved in diagnosis and treatment included Dr Milind Pande- Pathologist, Dr Raju Khandelwal, Dr Nishikant Lokhande and Dr Sudha Ambatkar, radiologists. The intensivists team included Dr Ashish Shukla, Dr Rani Lakhe, Dr Roshan Jawdekar, Dr Santosh Gadge, Dr Saurabh Rathi, Dr Vasundhara Jain and Dr Ganesh Bhure. Ambika Nair and Preeti Joseph were the paramedical assistants. Dr Sanil Koyili led the team of physiotherapists.
