René Pérez, Calle 13‘s Residente, took to social media to reveal the logo of his forthcoming solo project and explain the inspiration behind the design.
In a video posted on his official Facebook page, the Puerto Rican artist was joined by a team member from the digital creative agency Hello Monday, who helped design the new logo they say was “inspired by diversity.”
“We wanted to communicate diversity and the fact that we can all be different on the outside but inside, we connect and come from the same place,” the pair explains in English and Spanish.
After revealing the result, a rearrangement of letters on the word “Residente” in an effort to make it more universal, they reveal other designs that are still being worked on for the project. One of those designs includes the removal of color from flags around the country.
“A flag means that you belong to somebody and this was exactly the wrong way of symbolizing what we wanted to do. But, we quickly realized that removing the colors from flags, you get the same message you would get if we didn’t focus on the color of our skin.”
