Dance: You will have heard plenty of Skrillex's EPs and remixes to date, but Recess is his first full-length studio outing. Recorded over a three-year period during rest breaks in between gigs, the album does sound a bit fragmented but the flip side is, you can pretty much listen to it in any order, picking random tracks for your playlist at will, as there isn't really anything thematic about it at all.
Try It Out (Neon Mix) (feat.
Alvin Risk) was the album's lead single and whips up a storm, upbeat and big beat all the way. All Is Fair in Love and Brostep (featuring Ragga Twins) features the obligatory dub breaks that will find favor among fans of that genre too. Title-track Recess (with Kill the Noise featuring Fatman Scoop and Michael Angelakos) was the album's second single and will keep you engaged with its deep club vibe. Incidentally, as testament to the fact that this artist is evolving beyond the confines of just dance/dubstep, there is also a clear element of rap in this album with some strong lyrics. The good thing is, in places where that does appear, it gels well. Another good cut is Dirty Vibe (with Diplo featuring G-Dragon and CL). All said and done, if you are a fan of Skrillex, don't hesitate to get this one. It'll be interesting to see how his music continues to evolve.
