Prantij civic body's woman member immolates self, dies

PALANPUR: A member of BJP-ruled Prantij municipality committed suicide by setting herself ablaze at her house on Ghadiyar Kuva Cinema Road in the town on Wednesday.
Alakhuben Rathod, 57, who was elected on BJP ticket from ward 6, was suffering from some mental illness and was under treatment. Rathod suffered 70% burns and was rushed to Himmatnagar Civil Hospital where she succumbed.
In her statement to the police, Rathod said she had taken the drastic step due to nagging mental illness and that no one should be blamed for the suicide.
Her husband Bhavansinh Rathod is a driver in Gujarat State Road Transportation Corporation (GSRTC) and was away in Ahmedabad.
