Activists of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Rashtriya Samaj Paksha (RSP) are up against each other in the city. A group of NCP activists allegedly ransacked the RSP office at Sinhagad Road on Tuesday evening, following which a group of RSP activists allegedly threw ink on NCP supremo Sharad Pawar’s photo on Wednesday at Baramati hostel in Gokhale Nagar. The dispute arose after Mahadev Jankar, a key leader of RSP, which is an ally of the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP)-led government in the state, allegedly made objectionable remarks against NCP leader Ajit Pawar during a rally at the foothills of Bhagvangarh shrine in Ahmednagar district on Tuesday. BJP minister Pankaja Munde was the key speaker at this rally.

Upset with Jankar’s remark, NCP activists in Pune allegedly ransacked the RSP office on Tuesday evening. RSP activists have now lodged a complaint against NCP workers, including their activist Rupali Chakankar, for ransacking their office.

According to the police, RSP activist Umesh Kokre and others allegedly barged into the Baramati hostel around 12 pm on Wednesday. They, allegedly, also manhandled guard Ganpat Baban Kokate (33), shouted slogans and then threw ink on Pawar’s photo inside the hostel.

Hostel inhabitants managed to nab Kokre and handed him over to the Janwadi Police. He has been arrested following a complaint by Ganpat Kokare at the Chaturshringi police station.

Meanwhile, NCP activists rushed to Baramati hostel and allegedly manhandled RSP activist Santosh Waghmode Patil (26) near Janwadi police station. Santosh filed a complaint following which the police registered a non-cognizable offence. RSP has also demanded the arrest of NCP activist Rupali Chakankar.

Festive offer

Senior police officers, including Deputy Commissioner of Police (special branch) Ganesh Shinde, visited Baramati hostel to control the situation. Police officers have been deployed outside the offices of NCP and RSP and around the Baramati hostel to prevent any untoward incident.
