Seth Meyers: Nerd Prom is ‘worse’ to host than you think

Seth Meyers has a word of advice for whoever headlines the next White House Correspondents’ Association dinner: “However bad a room you think it is, it’s a little worse than that.”

The “Late Night” host — who has taken his NBC show on the road this week, broadcasting from Washington — won solid reviews when he roasted then-“Celebrity Apprentice” star Donald Trump as the annual springtime dinner’s entertainer in 2011. Among Meyers’s one-liners back then: “Donald Trump has been saying that he’ll run for president as a Republican — which is surprising, since I just assumed he was running as a joke.”

{mosads}When asked during a recent chat with ITK whether he would consider emceeing again at the gala — known for its notoriously critical and/or uptight room of lawmakers and journalists — Meyers, 42, replied, “I don’t know. I felt like I got out of there pretty unscathed as far as how terrible a room that is and how much stress is involved.”

“I would love to think that I will walk away and not return to doing it again,” the “Saturday Night Live” alum said, while noting that he also “really enjoyed it.”

“I just happened to do it in a good year, where it was a fun event to do, and there was plenty to talk about, and I would hate to chase that high.”

Meyers says he’s advised other dinner entertainers to “scale down your expectations” ahead of the big night, typically attended by the president. Former Comedy Central host Larry Wilmore appeared at the last Correspondents’ dinner in April. Other past performers have included late-night hosts Jimmy Kimmel and Conan O’Brien, “SNL” cast member Cecily Strong and “Community” star Joel McHale.

“That afternoon when I walked in the room just to get a feel for it, I think if there had been a button I could press to go back in time to withdraw my consent, I probably would’ve,” Meyers said.
