DEHRADUN: Panic gripped the religious town of Rishikesh on Wednesday morning after three motorcycle-borne assailants shot a jeweller in broad daylight and decamped with a bag full of gold and silver jewellery worth lakhs.
The 40-year-old trader Joginder Singh, who sustained gunshot injury in his back and was referred to Jolly Grant hospital, had come to deliver silver and gold jewellery to local jewellery shops.
The incident occurred near the Rishikesh main bus stand.
Hailing from Deoband in Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh, Joginder had reached Rishikesh on Wednesday morning in bus. According to police officials, he was regular to Rishikesh for business purposes.
Circle Officer (CO) Rishikesh Chakrdhar Anthwal told TOI, “It seems that the assailants were waiting for Joginder as they targeted him immediately after he got down from the bus and took few steps for boarding an auto-rickshaw. Firstly, they tried to snatch the bag, but when he resisted, they opened fire on him,”
Meanwhile, police has launched a massive manhunt to nab the culprits and footage of CCTVs installed in the nearby areas are being secured to examine whether they captured movements of the suspected assailants on Wednesday morning.
“A checking drive is being carried out especially at all entry and exit points of Rishikesh. We would be able to nab all three of them very soon,” said Anthwal.
