Captain Raymond Holt (Andre Braugher) and Detective Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg) are back at the Nine-Nine headquarters after six months of hiding in Florida, but the squad is put on night shift duty and struggles to cope up with the new setup on “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” season 4, episode 4 (Brooklyn Nine-Nine 4x04).

Spoiler alert: This recap contains plot details about season 4 of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine.” The fourth season premiered Sep. 20 on Fox US. Season 3 is available on Netflix Australia.

The episode begins with Peralta fighting off his colleagues as they attempt to cut off his Coral Palms-grown frosted tips, only to comply when he sees Charles Boyle (Joe Lo Truglio) rocking the same hairdo.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine 4x04 – Night shift blues

The squad is a little down that they were on night shift, a punishment handed to them by Captain C.J. (Ken Marino) after the Coral Palms trip. Holt tries a number of attempts to cheer up the precinct, even playing “merry-go-round music” for them. But even he gets frustrated when his officers show no appreciation for his efforts.

“I tried to make this fun. I even learned what Skrillex was,” he says to them.

Meanwhile, Rosa Diaz (Stephanie Beatriz) laments the fact that her lover Adrian Pimento (Jason Mantzoukas) hasn't returned despite of Jimmy “The Butcher” Figgis already in jail. Pimento promised to come back when the mob boss was incarcerated.

Peralta decides to shake off the Florida rust by solving a burglary case with Boyle, labelling themselves “The Night Boys.” The duo experiences problems finding information about the suspect, a certain Dave Smith.

Peralta tries to pursue the suspect alone the following morning but, due to injury, fails to catch up when Smith flees.

The detective then halts a moving crossover SUV driven by Jessica "Jess" Christopher Day (Zooey Deschanel) and attempts to “commandeer” the vehicle in order to follow Smith. He crashes the car after a series of manoeuvres to pass through traffic.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine 4x04 – Making amends

The squad apologises to Capt. Holt for not appreciating his efforts to lift up their spirits, noting that they feel better knowing that their captain hates the night shift just as much as they do.

Peralta also apologises to Boyle for being upset with him when he wasn’t able to accompany him to pursue Smith. Boyle had to tend to his 4-year-old adopted son Nikolaj.
