DEHRADUN: As we enter second week of October, the people of Uttarakhans should brace for dip in temperatures, especially minimums, in coming days due to prevalent north-westerly winds over the hill state.
Significantly, the meteorologists at Meteorological Centre in Dehradun expect temperatures will get colder as the week progress, with night readings dropping the most. Even days will witness dip in the mercury in next few days.
The first sign of winter came after higher reaches like Gangotri and Yamnotri in Uttarkashi, Badrinath in Chamoli and Kedarnath in Rudraprayag district received season’s first snowfall on Monday evening, under the influence of western disturbance, which resulted in significant drop in temperature in the hills.

Meteorological Centre Director, Bikram Singh, told TOI, “Cold and gusty north-westerly winds coming from Himalayas will drop the temperatures by at least 2-3 degrees in the next few days in Uttarakhand. The effect is already visible as places in the hills have started experiencing plunge in mercury.”
Notably, the minimum temperature at Mukteshwar in Nainital district has already gone below 10 degree Celsius with 9.9 degrees recorded on Monday night. Similarly, the night temperature at Tehri was dropped to 11.1 degree Celsius on Monday.
Speaking on the snowfall in Gangotri, Yamunotri and Badrinath, Bikram Singh said that rain along with light snow at the higher reaches occurred on Monday evening due to active western disturbance over Uttarakhand. However, the system has now passed and dry weather is likely to prevail in the state throughout this week, said Singh.
