Pune: A 52-year-old assistant police inspector, Nandkumar Vitthal Deshmukh, ended his life by hanging himself from the ceiling fan in his house in Wakad on Sunday night.
A suicide note left behind by Deshmukh stated that he was ending his life as he felt that "he was not doing anything for his family". Deshmukh has asked his brother to take care of his sons, said Shridhar Jadhav, senior inspector of the Wakad police station.
"Prima facie it appears that Deshmukh took the extreme step due to depression," said an officer from the crime branch.
A resident of Nakhate Vasti, Deshmukh was attached to the police headquarters in Shivajinagar. He went to his room to take rest on Sunday afternoon as he was in the night shift.
When he did not come out of his room till 8.30 pm, his family members started knocking on the door, but there was no response from him. "His son, then, removed the windowpane and saw him hanging from the ceiling fan," Jadhav said.
Jadhav said his family members immediately alerted the police about the incident. "Our team rushed to the spot and broke-opened the door. Deshmukh was found hanging by a sari from the fan. We took him to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead by the doctors," Jadhav added. Deshmukh is survived by his wife and two sons.
