Next Dell XPS 13 Will Be a Convertible With Edge-to-Edge Display
Dell will introduce a convertible version of the XPS 13 with an edge-to-edge display in time for CES 2017, a Dell source tells PCMag.
Unlike other convertibles on the market, the XPS 13 convertible will feature Dell's "InfinityEdge" design, which enables each side of the the display to extend to within millimeters of the bezel's edge. This design provides the illusion of a borderless screen that extends from corner to corner and side to side. The new unit will also feature Intel's Kaby Lake processor.
The tricky part about designing a convertible with an edge-to-edge display is that when the device is used as a tablet, the edges and corners of the screen are typically the locations where users hold the device. Without some sort of tablet-mode software solution for this issue, users will accidentally click on links and buttons at the edges of the screen.
Although our source said Dell would make the experience possible in a manner similar to how one navigates on a phone (e.g. touching the screen in one spot while scrolling up and down in another), the source declined to provide additional comment.
For reference, last year's Dell XPS 13 Touch is our Editors' Choice for ultraportable laptops. It features a 13.3-inch, QHD+ (3,200-by-1,800-pixel), resolution screen. It weighs 2.85 pounds and it's just 0.6 inches thick.
Dell will also refresh the Latitude 13 series with convertible form factors and InfinityEdge displays. As with the XPS 13, our source declined to offer specifics about the devices.
The Latitude lineup, although similar in design to XPS models, are designed for business users. They typically come packed with software that enables mobile device managers to remote wipe devices and prevent malware attacks.
