- 5. Free as in Freedom "Free software" is a matter of liberty, not price. To understand the concept, you should think of "free" as in "free speech," not as in "free beer" (Richard Stallman, The Free Software Definition)

The Four Freedoms ● The freedom to run the program, for any purpose (freedom 0). ● The freedom to study how the program works, and adapt it to your needs (freedom 1). ● Access to the source code is a precondition for this. ● The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor (freedom 2). ● The freedom to improve the program, and release your improvements (and modified versions in general) to the public, so that the whole community benefits (freedom 3). Access to the source code is a precondition for this.

But the Proper Reason: “It provides a better value...” Security, Reliability/Stability/Robust Platform, Open standards and vendor independence, Reduced reliance on imports, Developing local software capacity Piracy, Localization, Learning about new environments, Spoilt for choice, Excellent community-support

A 19 year old Finnish college student started one of the most important open source projects - Linus Torvalds A 22 year old Belgian student created one of the most popular CMS out There. - Dries Buytaert; A 19 year old American student created one of the most popular Blogging Platform - Matt Mullenweg No, he did not create any FOSS software. But, he created one of the largest product-based business powered by FOSS -Mark zuckerberg

FUD: Fear+Uncertainty+ Doubt ● You don't know anything about it ● You have to write your own device drivers ● You have to know the command line to use Linux ● Open source means the code isn't secure ● You can't open Microsoft documents in Linux ● The desktops are too hard to use ● The Linux operating system doesn't play well with others
