Cards put Evan Mathis on IR, sign Ulrick John from Fins' practice squad

TEMPE, Ariz. -- After suffering a left ankle injury in the first half Thursday night, his third lower leg injury of the season, Arizona Cardinals right guard Evan Mathis was placed on injured reserve Saturday.

The Cardinals signed offensive tackle Ulrick John off the Miami Dolphins' practice squad to fill Mathis' roster spot.

Mathis, 34, has been hampered by foot and ankle injuries this season, his first with the Cardinals. He suffered a mid-foot injury in Week 1 against New England and turf toe in Week 2 against Tampa Bay. He missed Week 3's loss at Buffalo but returned for Week 4 against Los Angeles and half of Week 5 on Thursday night, a 33-21 win over San Francisco.

Mathis hasn't officially decided on his playing future, but signs point to him retiring after 12 seasons.

"I'm only going to play if someone lets me be a third-down pass-rusher," Mathis told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Caplan.

Versatile swing offense lineman Earl Watford is expected to fill Mathis' role in the Cards' starting lineup.
