PUNE: Recent heavy spells of rain have maintained water stock in most dams in
Bhima basin at maximum capacities. Of the 25 major dams in the basin, water stock in 14 dams was at 100%, the latest report of the state irrigation department has revealed. Among other dams, stock in about four dams was over 90% while remaining dams had around 50% stock of their respective capacities.
Catchments of most dams recorded heavy spells of rain in last 10 days, which led to an addition of water in the reservoirs. The intensity of rain has reduced only in last three days.
Among 14 dams that have 100% water stock are
Varasgaon and
Panshet that supply water to Pune and Pavana dam that supplies drinking water to
Pimpri Chinchwad. Recent rains also helped to increase water stock in Ujani dam to 100% mark. Ujani is the largest dam in Bhima basin having storage capacity of over 110 TMC water.
Officials in the state irrigation department said that catchments of about 8 dams have recorded over 2000 mm of rainfall during monsoon of which two dams have recorded over 3000 mm rainfall since June 1. Of the four dams that supply water to Pune, Temghar, Panshet and Varasgaon have recorded over 2000 mm of rains while catchments of
Khadakwasla received 825 mm rainfall since June, officials said.
