MCL maintains growth but falls behind target

Talcher, Oct 8 (UNI) Mahanadi Coalfield Ltd (MCL), the number one coal company of coal behemoth Coal India Ltd (CIL), has maintained 6.3 per cent growth in coal output in first half of the current financial year but failed to achieve the target.
Company sources here today said the MCL has achieved 91 per cent of the target during this time.
According to official source, the MCL, the largest coal company in the country has recorded a production of 63.79 million tonne (MT) as against the target of 70.14 MT in last fiscal. The output was 60.03 MT in the corresponding period of last fiscal.
As expected, Talcher coalfield produced 37.947 million tone as against the target of 44.372 MT. The last year output was at 36.09 MT,a growth of 2.4 per cent. Similarly another coalfield comprising IB valley and Basundhara area recorded an output of 26.849 MT as against the target of 25.76 MT,the production in last year was 23.93 MT, a growth of around 12 per cent .
MCL record also showed that Bhubaneswari coalmine at Talcher has recorded around 12MT, highest coal output among the mines as against the target of 10.5 MT. The production of the coalmine was 11.81 MT last year.
There is an achievement of 114 per cent of the target, source added. The mine is outsourced to Bhubaneswari Coalmining Ltd (BCML), subsidiary of Aditya Birla group, MCL sources said.
The union coal ministry has given CIL and MCL the target to produce 598 MT and 167 MT respectively in the current fiscal. MCL which had produced 138 MT in 2015-16 has been asked to produce 29 million tonne more in the current fiscal. It means that the company located in Odisha have to produce remaining 104 million tones in the second half of the current year.
Although the coal company registered growth higher than the CIL, still it is trailing behind the
target.
According to MCL officials sources this annual target is impossible to achieve as most of the mines at Talcher face either land problems or have no forest clearance. The company can stretch up to 145 to 150 million tonne by the end of the year if all goes well.
Even though the forest clearance of Jaganath Coalmines was cleared at a meeting at Chief secretary level an year ago, the Divisional Forest Officer of Angul is yet to hand over the forest land forcing closure of the mine.
MCL authorities identified at least five mega coalmines at Talcher which are plagued with land constraints. These are Kaniha, Ananta,Balaram, Bharatpur and Jaganath. The Kaniha mine was closed for 17 days in August and 11 days in September by local villagers demanding job and rehabilitation.
Angul Collector Anil Kumar Samal said the district administration is extending maximum cooperation to the coal company to boost up production.
“We have recently cleared some of the old bottlenecks and will also do so .Simultaneously we have also to take care of the people’s concern in the matter of their rehabilitation and resettlement as per the state law,” he said.
