Latest poll: Social Democrats neck and neck with Centre Party

The latest Yle poll assessing political party support in Finland suggests that the opposition Social Democratic Party is now tied with the leading government Centre Party, both showing 20.5 percent backing. The second most popular coalition partner, the National Coalition Party, has lost some of the momentum it gained after naming a new chair this summer, as has the Left Alliance.

The Finnish Broadcasting Company Yle’s latest political poll shows that support for the prime minister’s Centre Party and the opposition Social Democrats (SDP) is now even. Changes from the previous month’s assessment are small, but the trend continues: the SDP is attracting more voters, while the Centre Party is losing them.

Women in particular are jumping the Centre Party ship,as the latest poll indicated a loss of three percent of its female supporters in just one month’s time. The SDP has seen a corresponding 1.6 percent increase in women’s allegiance. Among men, however, the Centre Party gained three percent and the SDP lost support.

Opposition more popular

The balance of power between the three reigning parties and the rest that form the opposition has stayed the same throughout the autumn.

Of the 1,941 respondents to the Taloustutkimus poll, 46.8 percent support one of the governing parties, while 51.4 percent prefer a party in the opposition.

The biggest change in the government-opposition dichotomy occurred over a year ago, when support for the populist Finns Party went into a nosedive. In the 2015 general elections the three parties that later formed the government coalition received 57 percent of the vote.
