Exclusive! When Saiyami Kher expected Mirzya to be path-breaking like Neerja & Pink

Today is a big day for debutants Saiyami Kher and Harshvardhan Kapoor. Their film ‘Mirzya’ directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra has released today, October 7. Like every other actors even Saiyami, Harshvardhan and Rakeysh have high hopes because ‘Mirzya’ is not like any other masala flicks. In today’s time it is difficult to impress the movie lovers because with time, even their expectations keep changing. It’s not necessary that the audience will always love masala kind of a film. There have been times without it the Bollywood movie lovers have accepted serious films but only if it has been executed by not adding too much of drama and one of the biggest examples of recent times could be films like – ‘Neerja’ and ‘Pink’. Fans could not stop praising seeing the amazing work and the storyline in these two films.

Before the movie ‘Mirzya’ released there wasn’t much buzz about it but a lot was been spoken of the film’s lead pair – Saiyami Kher and Harshvardhan Kapoor. There were mixed response from movie lovers when they were asked whether they would love to watch ‘Mirzya’ mainly because it has been directed by the man who has given the industry films like ‘Rang De Basanti’ and ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’. But what people wanted to see apart from the plot were the debutants, their performance and chemistry. ‘Mirzya’ is not like the typical Bollywood film. To do a film like ‘Mirzya’ involves huge risk keeping in mind the taste of audiences, to be accepted by them seeing the kind of competition that is going in the B-town industry. So very first question that pops in each and every movie lovers head is, ‘why will any actor choose to do a movie as their ‘first’ that is based on a tragic love story’?

When Saiyami Kher and Harshvardhan Kapoor were busy promoting ‘Mirzya’, we asked the gorgeous actress does she have any sort of ‘fear’ whether the mass audience will accept her role or not in the film mainly because it’s her debut film. To that Saiyami said, “Fear is too bigger word I think. I wouldn’t say fear because I feel it’s always exciting when you don’t do what the norm is. I think this (Mirzya) is the first film for a debut where it’s so not linear; it’s so path-breaking, because Rakeysh Sir’s films are like that. It’s not the naach gaana, ye abhi action sequence karni hai, ye itne changes hai, it’s none of that. It’s about making us look real. It’s very real.” (ALSO READ: Mirzya: 5 Reasons why Harshvardhan Kapoor-Saiyami Kher’s film may FAIL to impress the masses!)

Saiyami Kher further said, “I wouldn’t say there’s fear also because the audiences have changed, every 8-10 months they keep changing like we’ve accepted a film like ‘Kapoor & Sons’, we’ve accepted a film like ‘Neerja’ this year itself , ‘Pink’ just now. We are evolving as an audience. I think there is a little change where I think people are tired of seeing the masala films. That will always remain because that’s what are films are. But then there is a big audience which is wanting to see more sensible cinema.” But sadly, what the actress thought and the kind of response that the film is being getting especially from the critics is very different. Here is the review on Mirzya by India.com and also let’s a look at some of other reviews:

NDTV Movies: For a story of young and defiant love, Mirzya is too passionless to exercise a sustained hold on the audience. The director is overly intent on putting an experimental spin on a flamboyantly filmed but rather undercooked drama in which a girl and a boy sustain their love across two births only to run into a high wall of resistance on both occasions.

Koimoi.com: Mirzya is a film for a niche audience. People who enjoy poetry in motion, this film is exactly that. For those who prefer frothy love stories, this intense affair may bore you out.

Hindustan Times: This 135-minute Shakespearean drama is visually impressive, but lacks the essence of a heart wrenching love-story. It’s a period drama trying hard to be a musical.

GulfNews.com: Saiyami Kher and Harshvardhan Kapoor aren’t very successful at bringing the urgency, turmoil or drama behind forbidden love. Watch Mirzya if you have a penchant for folk tales, poetry and mysticism. This grand love tragedy requires you to show a willingness to be transported to a land where lovers are skittish and crazy. The Huffington Post: Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s latest is a gorgeous-looking drama let down by a threadbare script, amateurish acting, and unbearably laboured storytelling.

So that’s what the critics have to say about ‘Mirzya’. In few hours, we’ll get to know what the mass audience thinks about the film and how much the movie will mint on its opening day. For more updates, keep watching this space.
