NEET 2016: No Second round seat allotment for deemed university medical/dental admission

Directorate of Medical Education & Research, DMER will not  carry out a second round seat allotment for the vacant MBBS/BDS seats. The first round of counselling and selection list was published on the website on October 3, 2016. DMER had been given the responsibility to conduct centralised counselling for vacant seats in the 18 medical and dental institutes across the state by the Supreme Court on October 28. . The seats will be left  in the deemed university medical and dental institutes will be filled through college-wise counselling.

The Bombay HC had earlier earlier asked the state government to prepare a separate merit list based on NEET 2016 for all India category. The court also directed the state that no list will be published until its further order.  Maharashtra state had also moved to the Supreme Court , and demanded that the  deemed institutes should be included  in the centralized admissions process for MBBS and BDS admissions for the academic year 2016-17.  Chief Justice Manjula Chellur and MS Sonak J directed the state government to prepare two merit lists; one would be an all-India merit list, and the other a merit list of students with Maharashtra state domicile.  The deemed universities had argued that they are governed by the statutory powers of the University Grants Commission (UGC) and also by the Medical Council of India and that the state government cannot overrule them.

The Supreme Court on September 28 had ordered that the remaining vacant seats in the state should be filled though centralised counselling before October 7 by the state authority. After the court order, the  domicile students would get first preference in the admission process and after that if seats remained vacant, those could be allotted to students from other states. The Directorate of Medical Education and Research controls and regulates the administration of 11 Government Medical colleges and Hospitals along with Urban & Rural Health centres attached to them.
