Lovelorn couple jumps into river, man dies

Ahmedabad: A 35-year-old man drowned in the Sabarmati on Wednesday afternoon after a joint suicide bid at the rivefront with a 32-year-old woman. Swimmers nearby saved the woman. The couple had decided to end their lives after they realized that they could not marry or live together.
According to Sabarmati Riverfront (W) police, Usman Abdul Vali Saiyad, 35, of Shah-e-Alam, had come to the riverfront walkway below Nehru Bridge at 4 pm along with the woman.After around half an hour, the couple held hands and jumped into the river. They were seen by a security staff after which Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services (AFES) were called. Meanwhile, local swimmers started search and soon found the woman. tnn
