4 Army jawans injured in shelling in Mendhar sector

Excelsior Correspondent
JAMMU, Oct 6: Four Army jawans were injured in Pakistan shelling and firing at Sona Gali in Mendhar tehsil of Poonch district in early hours of this morning even as an eerie calm prevailed along the Line of Control (LoC) in twin border districts of Poonch and Rajouri with no shelling or firing reported during the day today though migration from forward villages of Nowshera and Sunderbani continued.
Reports said four Army jawans sustained injuries during mortar shelling by Pakistani troops in Sona Gali forward area of Mendhar sector along the LoC in Poonch district in the wee hours of this morning. However, there were no civilian casualties. The troops from this side retaliated the shelling effectively.
The injured Army jawans have been identified as Dhanu Kumar, Ganesh Goswami and Sridhar. They have been hospitalized while injuries to fourth jawan were minor and he was treated locally.
A number of Pakistan army personnel were killed and injured when Indian troops had decimated Pakistani Post ‘Twin 1’ opposite Balnoi a couple of days back.
Sources said the shelling and firing from Pakistan side stopped in early hours of this morning.
“There was no shelling or firing in any part of the LoC during the day today including Mendhar, Balnoi, Sabzian in Poonch, Nowshera and Sunderbani in Rajouri and Pallanwalla in  Jammu, which were rocked by the shelling during past six days,” sources said.
However, fresh migration took place in Nowshera and Sunderbani sectors in Rajouri districts in view of heavy shelling yesterday in forward areas of Nowshera, bordering Sunderbani.
Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM), Nowshera, Harbans Lal told the Excelsior that 300 people from Kalal and Khori, 131 families from Kalsian and 200 people from Sher Makri have been accommodated in different Government accommodations including Government schools and community halls in safer areas.
About 300 people have also migrated from forward villages of Sunderbani sector.
Sources said despite administration’s order that the Government schools, where border migrants were not staying should resume normal working in the border areas, the people in Rajouri and Poonch districts have refused to send their wards to the schools, most of which fall within firing range of Pakistan army as they feared that shelling and firing from across the LoC could resume anytime.
According to sources, the people were not ready to send their students in the schools in all areas along LoC in Rajouri and Poonch districts notwithstanding the administration order that the schools, where border migrants were not staying can resume normal working. However, majority of these schools remained closed as people were not taking chances to send their wards to schools, located close to the LoC in view of shelling and firing from across the LoC.
Despite complete lull along LoC during the days, Army was maintaining high alert to counter and retaliate any fresh shelling or firing from Pakistan side.
The International Border (IB) in Jammu, Samba and Kathua districts also remained peaceful, sources said.
