Women blinded by surgery to get Rs 3 lakh compensation

The Madurai bench of Madras high court has ordered the Tamil Nadu government to pay a compensation of Rs 3 lakh each to seven aged women who attended a government-sponsored eye camp in Tirunelveli in 2013 and lost their eyesight after a surgery.

MADURAI: The Madurai bench of Madras high court has ordered the Tamil Nadu government to pay a compensation of Rs 3 lakh each to seven aged women who attended a government-sponsored eye camp in Tirunelveli in 2013 and lost their eyesight after a surgery.
The order was given on a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by one S Rameshkumar of Sivaganga district while rejecting the government’s submission that compensation could not be considered on a PIL.
The recipients of compensations are A Mariyammal (69), V Lakshmi (61), M Chellammal (60), V Chellamal (63), G Chellammal (60), P Mariam Aisa (52) and A Subbammal (61).
The women attended a free eye camp on April 8 and 9 in 2013 organised by District Blindness Control Society and government headquarters hospital in Tenkasi in Tirunelveli district under National Programme for Control of Blindness. They underwent cataract surgery on April 10 and consequently developed complications leading to loss of vision.
